This weekend our local town of Pomona will be hosting the fabulous “King of the Mountain” annual event. This is a huge internationally renowned event which attracts over 12,000 people to watch this gruelling 4.5 km race up Mount Cooroora.
The race runs from the centre of Pomona township, along the crowded streets that are packed with people and then heads up through the bush and up the mountain. The track up is steep and treacherous and in places only wide enough for one or two runners. The race down the mountain is not for the faint-hearted and the whole race is something that has to be seen to be believed.
In recent years the race has been screened live on a giant screen in the park so the spectators can now watch the entire race as it unfolds. Entrants in the King of the Mountain come from all over Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Rim and the United Kingdom. There is a strong rivalry between Australia and New Zealand participants.
Besides the race, the day has all the fun of a country fair, with many activities, competitions, amusement park rides and events for all the family.
This year Sew Crafty Goodness will be running a craft stall for our local school, Cooran State School. We are really looking forward to meeting locals and visitors and sharing some great ideas for upcycling using found materials.
