Last week we held the first of our “Learn to Crochet” workshops in our new art space HQ. It was only a small group but it was so lovely. One of the ladies who attended had never really done anything crafty before and she summed up my thoughts perfectly about the goodness of crafting. She said “isn’t it wonderful to get lost in the process of learning a new skill”. And that’s exactly what I love about any kind of art or craft. For me, it’s my meditation. You are so focussed on what you are doing it becomes a mindfulness practice.
And then there’s the benefit of getting together with others to learn a new skill. The joy of connecting! We are often so busy and caught up in our day to day routines it is a wonderful thing to take time out for yourself and to connect with like-minded folk. For many people attending a workshop like this might be the only time they get to do something for themselves. It is so important to take time out for yourself. The health benefits and feelings of well being are enormous.
I am extremely lucky to have my mother live close by and for classes like crochet (my skills are very basic) – she takes them for me. Mum was a home economics teacher for most of her working life and has many wonderful skills. So of course my love of arts and crafts has been passed down to me. And fortunately we now find ourselves in a situation where for the first time in a lot of years we live close to each other. I am truly blessed that I am able to spend time with and work with my mum.
Another of the great pleasures I get out of teaching crafts is when young people are involved. We had a couple of girls join in with our group and I love to see the expressions on their faces when they ‘get’ it. To pass on the love of crafting to young people is an absolute highlight for me. Knowing that this will become a life time love affair (because it will) brings me more happiness than anything else I do. Passing on the love of craft to a younger generation – it doesn’t get much better than that.
I am writing an e-book about my experiences of teaching crafts and creating a community. In the meantime I’ve created a little zine about the subject that will be available for sale very soon. I’m so excited about this project. I will be sure to let you know when it is ready.
In the meantime here are some pics from our day.
We will be running many more workshops throughout the year. Do you ever go to workshops to learn new skills?
