Well I’ve realised that running an online business, being a mum to three kids (and all that goes with that!), running a weekly craft group, making time for family and friends, and now starting a new retail shop makes for a very, very busy life. So it’s little wonder that my poor old neglected blog has not had a post for over a month. HOWEVER, did I mention, I now have A NEW SHOP!! – just a little excited here.
This past month has been spent moving all of my stock from my online shop out of our ‘bursting at the seams’ dining/living area and into a lovely new space in our village. Pictures will come soon I promise. Then it was a matter of packaging and pricing all that lovely stock that until now had lived in cupboards and drawers (because it didn’t need to be prettily packaged and priced).
And then of course came the fit-out – a time consuming exercise at the best of times but when there is no spare cash for such excesses it meant scouring our home, local op-shops, garage sales, begging friends and finding all kinds of creative ways to source bits and pieces to make my space look inviting, quirky, eclectic and, well, a little bit like me.
I am pretty much all set up now and the shop opened officially a couple of weeks ago. I’ve still to advertise and promote my business but just for now am happy pottering about and making things just right.
I LOVE working away from home. I am a much more productive person than I thought I was; without the distractions of dirty dishes, dirty clothes, clean clothes to be folded, running around, phone calls and the general day-to-day stuff that takes you away from what you really should be doing. I adore spending time in my space where I can do those things that have been on the back burner for so long because it felt slightly indulgent. I feel amazingly creative because the space I am using is so inspiring and has such a lovely feel.
After many, many years of being a work-at-home mum I am relishing this new stage of my life where I ‘go to work’ (although it doesn’t really feel like work). I love our house but was tired of the same four walls – it was very uninspiring and quite frankly getting me down.
I now have a new lease on life and can’t wait to take on the many projects I have spinning around in my head. First and foremost is the resumption of our craft group. For the last couple of years I have been running a craft get-together “The Sew Crafty Makers” at our local hall and while this venue has suited us really well it was always a bit of an effort to gather everything I needed each week and haul it along to the hall where I then had to unpack everything, set tables and chairs and then at the end of it pack it all up. NOW I am running our group each Thursday using a room at the premises where my shop is located. I LOVE IT! Everything is there and ready to go. And the space … well it’s perfect! Our local architects, the lovely boys of WD Architects, are allowing me to use their meeting room and it’s totally fantastic. It also triples as a band rehearsal room for our local groovestars “The Catbirds”, hence the drum kit in the background. Anyway excuse the quality of these photos – I only had my crappy little phone camera on me that day. I will post some better shots of the shop shortly.
At our last get-together Sam made herself a couple of gorgeous cushions with Echino fabric purchased from our shop “Sew Crafty Goodness“. They’ve come up looking pretty fabby don’t you think.
