This month’s challenge for the Collage Club was a theme I was super excited about and my head was brimming with ideas. “Enchanted Forest” … it conjured images of toadstools and pixies and fairy dust and floral loveliness and mythical creatures. So many ideas! So when I finally found the time to sit down and start work on it, what do you think I did? …. I froze!
Sometimes I find when I have a head full of ideas I actually find the creative process gets a little fuzzy and I’m not sure where to start. I knew what I wanted to do but I was confused by so many ideas. I think the fact that I’d made a bunch of origami toadstools for another project and then decided I wanted to incorporate them into my collage muddled the process up a bit for me.
Anyway in the end I stuck with my original idea, which was a forest opening into a wonderland of colour and creatures, and then kind of tried to incorporate the toadstools into my design. I’m not sure if I liked them being there in the end or not. So I’ve got a few versions of this collage .. one with the three toadstools, one with five and then one without. My favoured version is the three toadstools.
Normally I like a bit of white space in my work but for this design I filled it all. Again, I’m not sure how I feel about this. It’s different. I do think it’s really great to play and try different things and sometimes throw something into the mix that is a bit out of the ordinary. Because that’s what this should be about anyway. It’s not about getting it right or wrong or trying to please others .. it’s about playing and making time for creativity. And anyway what is pleasing to one person’s eye may not be to another person.
